Top 5 Art Games That Are Art

Art. It’s everywhere. In every child’s tear, in each leafy green plant, hidden inside the tiniest animals, art is pervasive throughout life. Even something as stupid and pointless as video games have art in them sometimes, so to celebrate art’s unstoppable ability to seep into everything here are our top 5 art games that are art.

5. Borderlands

Borderlands is art because it looks like it was drawn. The game is a pointless, overly long and mostly soulless RPG shooter with some window dressing that attempts humour. The game involves you trying to find a McGuffin to resolve the plot, and it’s all a bit predictable. However the graphics of Borderlands look like they were taken out of a picture someone drew so I guess that makes it art in some form. It only gets on this list because it has art in it, and thus is an art game.

4. Dante’s Inferno

Sometimes Dante’s Inferno quotes an actual book that was written once and so is art because of that reason. The game itself is just hitting stuff and picking stuff up sometimes but who cares because the gameplay can’t be art that’s the rules of art. Based on the ancient text of The Divine Comedy, this game gets to be art because that book was art so this is too. It loses points for not sticking to the original book as much so it obviously isn’t completely art just some art.

3. The Path

The Path isn’t fun to play so it is art. Everyone know art isn’t allowed to be fun and The Path is anything but an enjoyable experience so it is art. The game is based on Little Red Riding Hood, which isn’t itself art but sometimes things that are art are based on it so I guess this counts as that. The game is clever because it tells you to stay on the path but if you stay on the path then you lose. This is called depth and thoughtfulness. Or the human condition. One of those.

2. Earthworm Jim 2

Earthworm Jim 2 has classical music in it and we all know that this makes it very high art indeed. The whole worm in a spacesuit thing is of course deplorable and stupid, and only morons would be allowed to find that part of the game in any way worth their time, but the music in the levels is occasionally classical music so I guess that makes this game art the same way Borderlands was art. Also the ending doesn’t make sense so that is also art.

1. Pong

Pong was the first video game and is therefore original and that originality is exactly the same as art. Pong has only two colours, which is very art, and when the player wins the game starts again, highlighting the futility of life or competition or something. Pong is the best art game because it is the first and that is how art works.

So know we know what the best games that are art are we can all go and be better people because we understand the art. Art.

About Lewis Dunn

Lewis got into gaming as a child, when he was handed the portable version of crack cocaine, known colloquially as Tetris. He would spend hours trying to make blocks form lines so they would disappear never to return. At the age of 8 he had his first existential crisis as to what happens to blocks that disappear. Lewis has a deep love of humour in games, with some of his favourites being No More Heroes, Brutal Legend & Portal. Lewis enjoys writing bios in the third person.
